[dropcap]T[/dropcap]he Italians are known for cities that float, towers that lean and cars that almost break the speed of sound.

As of tomorrow night – at the Teatro Mayor Julio Mario Santo Domingo – Dante Alighieri’s Divine Comedy will fly when Italian choreographer Emiliano Pellisari presents his Trilogy of Dante with the performers of the Rome-based NoGravity Dance Company.

As part of the Danza  Alma en Movimiento dance season, NoGravity is a physical and poetic dance company in which dancers take flight with perfectly synchronised choreography.

Using techniques of Baroque theater, dancers, acrobats and actors, NoGravity reconstructs the route of souls in Dante’s epic work. The performers are suspended in the air and must journey from heaven to hell. With lighting and an electronic score, the actors rise and float, weightless, as the company’s name suggests.

Director Emiliano Pellisari has been referred to as “an architect of the human body” based on his use of performance and technology. The relationship of man and machine is at the core of his choreographic technique – the aerial dance.

The show is divided into three parts: “In Hell” dancers defy gravity by building powerful images that follow each other relentlessly. A world where real and virtual are mixed in a kaleidoscope of images. Strong percussion and rhythms intermingle with poetic moments.

“In Cantica,” Bach and Mozart accompany the flow of naked dancers-acrobats. White balloons hover over the stage as stairs present a never-ending Escher cycle. “In Paradise” the show is pure body language. The figurative and abstract meld to Gregorian chants and sounds of contemporary classical.

Audiences will appreciate a very different way of reading Dante over the next four days. So let your imagination fly with NoGravity.

Performances on July 7, 8, 9 start at 8:00 pm. Tickets range from $35,000 pesos to $170,000 and are available at Cine Colombia ticket agents or the theatre’s box office.

There is a morning performance on Sunday, July 10 and repeat function at 3:00 pm.
