Bogotá’s International Airport continues to position itself as a major transportation hub in South America and as slots become available to global carriers, passengers will have more choice when it comes to direct air travel to specific destinations.

Among the new players that have announced their arrival in Colombia is Chile’s low-cost JetSmart, beginning operations December 20, and with three frequencies a week on the Bogotá- Santiago route. Operated with an Airbus 320, JetSmart’s entry into the Colombian market gives travelers more choice and competitive pricing when looking at options in the southern hemisphere. From their Santiago base, JetSmart flies to popular tourist destinations in Peru, Brazil and Argentina.

Having launched the first direct Bogotá – Toronto flight, Air Canada expands its foothold in Colombia adding as of June 2, 2020, a new direct service between the capital and Montreal. The three times a week flights will be operated by Air Canada’s Rouge service and with a Boeing 767-300ER aircraft offering a choice of premium economy and economy seats. “We are very pleased to offer the only non-stop, year-round flights connecting Montreal and Bogotá, two vibrant cities steeped in history and culture,” remarked Air Canada’s Mark Galardo. “This new route complements our existing Toronto-Bogotá service, and positions Air Canada as a significant player linking the growing markets between Montreal and Colombia’s capital and largest city,” he said.

Air Canada 1952 will depart Montreal on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday at 10:45 pm arriving the following day in Bogotá at 04:15 am. The Montreal-bound flight (AC1953) departs Bogotá at 9:00 am and arrives in Montreal at 4:20 pm.

The flights are timed to connect Air Canada passengers with Star Alliance partner Avianca’s network to other South American destinations including Cali, Cartagena, Medellín, Cuzco, Lima, and Quito.

As connectivity with Canada expands, Colombia’s flagship airline Avianca has also expressed interested in a direct Bogotá – Toronto service. Currently, Avianca flies to Toronto’s Pearson with an A 320 from its El Salvador hub. Avianca has also expressed interest in a direct service linking Bogotá with San Francisco. The dates of these two new frequencies could be announced at the end of 2019.

In other aviation news, the acquisition of a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner by Turkish Airlines will provide more comfort for passengers flying between Istanbul and Bogotá as the airline’s newest member in the skies has replaced TK’s Airbus A330 on this route.
