“Una Noche sin Luna” – Juan Diego Botto (Argentina) and Sergio Peris-Mencheta (Spain)

Una Noche sin Luna (‘A moonless night’) is a play written and performed by the Argentina actor Juan Diego Botto. In this work Spaniard Sergio Peris-Mencheta collect lesser-known aspects of the life and work of Federico García Lorca from a sensibility of the 21st Century.

With three performances at Teatro Mayor – May 11, 12 and 13 (8 p.m) – “Una Noche sin Luna” is based on talks, interviews and conferences by the Spanish writer, as well as selections from  García Lorca’s repertoire of literary works and poems. Through these, and the dramaturgy of the actor and author Juan Diego Botto, Lorca comes to the stage in a powerful “first person voice, driven by irony, emotion and humor. The author also recounts his passage through a student residence, the criticism received by ‘Yerma’, his experience in La Barraca, his relationship with the press, love affairs and the stress of his final years.

The work also addresses issues such as the role of women, the always poetic look and demand, the need for artistic freedom and expression, the fight for freedom of sexual identity and the importance of memory and roots. Talking about Lorca today is talking about ourselves. And this work tries to do it from a vantage point of honesty and unique visual staging. Actor and author Juan Diego Botto, with his extensive experience in film and theater, and director Sergio Peris-Mencheta, who has won multiple awards as an actor and director in Spain, decided to carry out this work together after the success of ‘A piece invisible of this world’, which won four Max Awards, including Best New Author and Best Actor for Botto and Best Director for Peris-Mencheta.
