Sankai Juku (Japan): “Kosa-Between Two Mirrors”

The butoh dance work “Kosa-Between Two Mirrors” is the most recent creation of the Sankai Juku company. It was composed by director and choreographer Ushio Amagatsu during the COVID-19 pandemic.

With seven dancers who transmit the beauty of this Japanese dance/art, Sankai Juku was founded in 1975. Since then, it has been dedicated to presenting shows on world stages and teaching this ancient form of performance.

Amagastu is a pioneer in presenting butoh dance outside of Japan when, in 1980, she traveled to the Nancy International Festival in France, where she was so well received that, for the next four years, she was performing at events such as the Edinburgh Festival, the International Festival of Madrid and Cervantino International Festival in Guanajuato, Mexico.

Sankai Juku has performed in 47 countries, and in more than 700. Amagatsu Ushio has also created 14 butoh dance shows for the company since 1982, and has presented her unique works for more than 50 years in more than 45 countries. She has worked independently and chaired the juries of renowned dance competitions, such as the International Choreographic Competition of the Italian National Academy of Dance (2011).
