“Julieta tiene la culpa” – Companía BarCoDrama (Mexico)

Three ordinary women – a housewife, drama student, and jobless teacher – can’t get into the most anticipated theater premiere in town. It’s raining outside, so they decide to stay in the anteroom, listening to Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet on the other side of the door through a crack. “How good it would be to be one of those women that someone writes something important about,” they think to themselves. “Nobody would ever write anything about us.”

This theme is at the heart of the Mexican theatre company BarCoDarama’s “Julieta is to blame,” written and directed by Bárbara Colio and project that begins with the intervention of three fundamental female characters of modern theater, written by men, and their reconstruction in today’s society. It’s about Nora, from Henrik Ibsen’s ‘Dollhouse’; Nina, from ‘The Seagull’ by Anton Chekhov, and Blanche, from ‘A Streetcar Named Desire’ by Tennessee Williams. What if it was Blanca who gave Nora the idea to walk through the door? Or maybe it was Nina who made Blanca see the kindness in strangers! Could it be that Nora was the one who taught Nina to be an actress? In the anteroom of the theater, they find the opportunity to see themselves and dare to think about changing their destinies.
