El Museo: La preponderancia de lo pequeño

La preponderancia de lo pequeño – or in English ‘the preponderance of the small’ is an exquisite body of work motivated by artist Nadín Ospina on the historical circumstance we are living: “humanity has stopped seeing the beings and the primordial elements of nature,” believes the conceptual artist. “In a world mired in uncertainty, the conviction that the human being is the center of the universe in his own right begins to appear before our eyes as a mistaken and self-destructive approach.”

From the execution of sculptures that represent in detail the anatomy, colors and typical characteristics of various birds of the Colombian local fauna, together with elements taken from the images of the Royal Botanical Expedition, Ospina creates a spatial intervention. One that summons the beauty, historical, aesthetic and political value of the scientific enterprise, invites reflection on the importance of recognizing the subtle  and urgency to recover the harmony of the planet. The work, beyond being a scientific reference is an exercise in detailed observation of the simple and the essential; a a call to look at the other, the neighbor, with consideration, compassion and hospitality.

Nadín Ospina earned a Master of Fine Arts from the Jorge Tadeo Lozano University in Bogotá. He has participated in numerous exhibitions around the world such as the Biennials of Sao Pablo, Havana, Venice and Lyon. He has recently exhibited his work The preponderance of the small at the Museum of the University of Antioquia as a finalist for the Salón Nacional Mutis in 2021, as well as at the Museum of Anthropology in Madrid and the Peres Art Museum in Miami. Winner of the prize of the National Hall of Colombian Artists, in 1992, and the Guggenheim Grant in New York, in 1997.
