De Sheherazade is one of the most recent creations by the Spanish choreographer María Pagés – an international reference in flamenco dance – and El Arbi El Harti, co-director of the María Pagés Choreographic Center.
The show starts from the story of Sheherazade and ‘The Thousand and One Nights’ to reflect on the role of women, and of words, in humanity’s resistance to extreme violence. Scheherazade, who is a woman and all women, runs through the choreographic story claiming the word as the best tool to save humanity from its endemic violence.
However, this woman, the archetype of peace, also shares with the public her knowledge, contradictions, loves, heartbreaks, strengths, weaknesses, insecurities, satisfactions and loneliness; she communicates with the open soul her relationship with the body, desire, motherhood and equality not yet achieved.
Sheherezade speaks of light and the shadows of contemporaneity. The choreographies reflect a female diversity that takes over the action to conquer the stage, both real and symbolically. There are eleven women who storm the stage, which is the stage of life. They are all women who have a strong singularity, women who think in a choreutical and musical key the plurality of the genre that they represent beyond physical, ethnic, religious, cultural and aesthetic differences. ‘De Sheherazade’ explores the flamenco, popular and classical musical repertoire. Fundamentally, he creates original music composed by Rubén Levaniegos, together with Sergio Ménem and David Moñiz, directed by María Pagés, based on the dramaturgical story and the lyrics created for the play.
The Teatro Mayor will host two performances of De Sheherezade, on March 17 (8:00 pm), and March 18 (5:00 pm).
