‘Camilo’ Teatro La Candelaria. Director: Patricia Ariza

This work premiered in 2015 as a result of a collective creation process of the Teatro La Candelaria to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the death of Camilo Torres. Through ‘Camilo’ the actors embark on a symbolic search for the disappeared body of a revolutionary, former Catholic priest and member of the Colombian intelligentsia, who along with Fals-Borda, co-founded the sociology department of Universidad Nacional. The play also recovers aspects of the former guerrilla’s life, through personal testimonies and memories.

As a complex character whose life was marked by contradictions: mysticism, rebellion, love and sacrifice, ‘Camilo’ on stage deepens our understanding of the man’s humanity and the social conflict in which we live. On the one hand, Camilo proposes effective love for others; on the other, he himself experiences the difficulty of exercising the “apostolate” or militancy as a legal right and an act of justice. There is also Camilo’s fatal decision to rebel against the establishment and join the insurgency, in which he died in his first combat against the country’s armed forces.
