The fact that Bogotá is not close to any large body of water doesn’t stop maritime-enthusiasts from getting together to admire yachts, boats, sail boats, as well as related accessories and equipment.

With stunning high altitude lakes near the capital – Tota, Tominé and Neusa – to name just three, and the majestic Magdalena River several hours west of the city, the choice to either hoist sails or switch on the outboard depends very much on your sea legs, but if you enjoy recreational water sports, El Retiro Shopping Center will host its 3rd edition of the International Boat Show of Bogotá and that launches Friday Sept 30 and runs until Sunday October 8.

For Liliana Santoro of El Retiro Shopping Center hosting a show of this magnitude reflects the capacity of Bogotá to be a major business and networking center with loyal customers interested in nautical activities and marine services. Renowned exhibitors for the third-year running will showcase what’s new in boats, nautical sports, tourism and clothing. A model ship will be exhibited and there are workshops for children, recreational activities and a photo exhibition depicting corals, fish species and of course, ships. Admission to the 2016 International Boat Show is free.

With 1,600 kilometers of coastline on the Caribbean and 1,300 km of coastline on the Pacific, Colombia’s nautical tourism potential, like other clusters in this industry, will grow over the years, and with rivers for rafting and kayaking, it’s not all about ocean-crossing vessels, as there are many small boats for sale for the weekend on the lake, as well as canoes, water skiis and diving equipment. Marinas or sailing clubs will also be present at the boat show to offer memberships and training lessons for those who want to expand their recreational horizons. The nautical tourism sector is expected to generate 300,000 new jobs by 2018, according to projections by the National Plan of Nautical Tourism, released by the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Tourism.

Marine companies that will participate this year include Elite Yacht, Andromeda Yacht and Eduardoño – a Colombian company with over 70 years of experience in marketing and manufacturing sea vessels.

The Finnish brand of premium range motorboats Axopar will present their Axopar 28 t-top boat and Germany’s Bavaria Yachtbau will also be represented. For those who want to get their PADI scuba certification, Deep Divers will also be present alongside travel agencies to make that next underwater adventure a reality. So don’t miss out on a boat show that brings Bogotá closer to the sea, while always close to the stars.
