Tens of thousands are marching across Colombia in support of the nationwide workers strike, Paro Nacional.
The mass demonstrations consist of student organizations, women’s groups, victims of the country’s internal conflict, pensioners, environmentalists, artists and indigenous peoples among many others. The #21N Paro Nacional in Bogotá is being conducted in an atmosphere of relative calm, civility and solidarity.
However, the festive spirit was hijacked at 4:30 pm when masked vandals entered the Plaza de Bolívar and violence erupted in Bogotá’s historic square. The enmascarados, stormed the metal barricades at the entrance to Congress and smashed windows at the Mayoralty.
A day that began with peaceful protest has turned to violence.
