Colombian crew member missing in Alaskan waters

A crew member of Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) was reported missing on the Norwegian Pearl Thursday, September 8, while the ship was sailing in Lynn Canal, Alaska. The 25-year-old, a Colombian woman, disappeared from the cruise ship at around 1:40 a.m. The crew member was then reported missing at 5 a.m. when she didn’t report for duty. Onboard security viewed the ship’s CCTV cameras and that revealed she had gone overboard while Norwegian Pearl was sailing towards Glacier Bay. Based on the CCTV footage, the woman was wearing grey pants and a red knee-length jacket at the time of her disappearance.

The Coast Guard was notified by the bridge at around 5:30 a.m. and search and rescue operation was under way involving H-60 helicopter and 45-foot Coast Guard Cutter. Despite their best efforts Coast Guard couldn’t locate the crew member and suspended the search on Friday at 4 p.m.

According to the Alaska search and rescue organization MATSAR, the missing crew member was Natalia Molina, age 25, from Colombia. Her family was notified about her tragic disappearance.

Dona Carmen from MATSAR said “On 9-8-16, at approximately 0700 hours, the United States Coast Guard initiated a Search and Rescue for Natalia Molina, age 25, of Colombia after it was learned she fell overboard from the cruise ship Norwegian Pearl near Funter Bay. The United States Coast Guard and Alaska Wildlife Troopers sent air and vessel assets to the search area and were unable to locate Molina. The search was suspended on 9-9-16, at approximately 1600 hours. Next of kin have been updated.”

This is second Norwegian Cruise Line crew member overboard in seven months. Filipino crew member Dominic Santiago Gubertino age 55, working on Norwegian Sun went overboard in Chile. Upon arrival in the port of Chacabuco, his friends realized he was missing. After security officers reviewed the CCTV cameras they found out he went overboard at 06.41 a.m. on February 16, 2016.
