In 1991, the Dutch/Brazilian violinist Lavard Skou-Larsen and a handful of colleagues decided to form an unusual ensemble. The aim of this ensemble was to perform orchestral chamber music with the freedom of soloists.

Skou-Larsen combed Europe and the rest of the world until he had a group of first class musicians. Their inspiration was the unforgettable Sandor Végh, whose charisma had influenced many members of the group considerably. In only its first year of existence, the Salzburg Chamber Soloists toured the United States and Canada.

Thanks to the success of the tour, invitations followed to perform with world famous soloists and from 1992 to 1995, the Soviet-born violinist Boris Belkin became the Salzburg Chamber Soloists’Artistic Director and during his tenure, the orchestra released two CDs of Mozart’s work.

Their first big tour of South America took place in 1993 another success for the Soloists was the ensembles participation in “La Folle Journée Mozart” festival in Nantes two years later. In 1995, the orchestra completed a second tour of South America, returning with the Critics Prize for Best Foreign Orchestra to have performed at the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires.

Since then, the orchestra has charmed audiences in Amsterdam’s Concertgebouw, Berlin’s Philharmonic, the Tonhalle of Zurich and the Teatro Municipal of Rio de Janeiro, as well as other important concert halls.

The Salzburg Chamber Soloists are also regular guests at various festivals: including the Academia Chigiana of Siena, the Turku Musikfestival in Finland and the Würzburg Mozart Festival.

Back to North America, the Salzburg Chamber Soloists have performed in San Francisco, Los Angeles, Chicago and Calgary. In 2013, the Salzburg Chamber Soloists debuted in New York at the Metropolitan.

The time has now arrived for the Salzburg Chamber Soloists to delight audiences with their rich and textured sound.
