As part of the 16th edition of the Ibero-American Theatre Festival of Bogotá (FITB), the  Ljubljana Opera Ballet presents a tribute to Slovenian director Tomaž Pandur who died age 53. Pandur, considered one of the most important theatre directors of recent times and close friend of the FITB festival, had his last presentation in Bogotá during the 2016 festival, just months before his untimely death. The venue for “Symphony of Sorrowful Songs” is the Teatro Mayor Julio Mario Santo Domingo and work created by Tomaz’s sister Livia Pandur and choreographer Ronald Sakovic.

Based on the Polish composer Henryk Gorecki’s Symphony No. 3, titled Symphony of Sorrowful Songs, this performance by the Ljubljana Opera Ballet explores the relationship between time and space through stark choreography and physical dance. The 53-minute symphony that is steeped in medieval chants and considered a memorial for the victims of the Holocaust, premiered in 1977. Since the release of the album version by Nonesuch records in 1992, Gorecki’s poignant work has sold more than a million copies.

The Ballet of the Opera of Ljubljana is based in the Slovenian capital and has been performing for over 90 years.

This powerful work that combines contemporary ballet with sacred music takes to the stage Wednesday 21, Thursday 22 and Friday 23 at 8:30 pm, and Saturday 24, at 5:30 p.m. and 8:30 pm.
