[dropcap]I[/dropcap]t’s more than just beautiful. It’s art, it’s functional, it’s educational. It’s wood.

This month the art gallery at Bogotá’s Club el Nogal presents Arte&Madera (Art and Wood), an expansive exhibition of works by 57 artists several of whom typically work in other media.

Among those presenting works at Arte&Madera are furniture designers, carpenters, woodworkers, plastic artists and architects.

“The show represents an innovative challenge in which recognized artists leave their comfort zones as far as materials are concerned in order to create functional works from wood,” said representatives of the exhibition in a statement.

But Arte&Madera is more than just an art exhibition.

The show will help support the Fundación Ana Restrepo Del Corral, which works with more than 700 underprivileged children in neighborhoods in Bogotá’s northeast.

That foundation will also work to plant trees in the hills next to its headquarters as a way to give back the “loan” provided by wood used to create the artworks on display at Arte&Madera.

During the four months designated for artists to plan, design and build the functional works featured in the exhibition, they worked alongside industrial designers and other experts to create truly innovative projects.

Arte&Madera will launch on Wednesday at 7 p.m. and continue through April 27. The exhibition will be open to the public between 10 a.m.-7 p.m. on weekdays and 11 a.m.-4:30 p.m. on weekends.

Prices for the works range from $600,000 pesos to $10 million pesos.
