From London to Delhi, New York and Cape Town, millions are taking to the streets Sunday, in a 72-hour demonstration over failed climate change policies by world leaders, and ahead of Tuesday’s key climate change forum at the United Nations in New York. Tens of thousands are expected  to protest Sunday in Manhattan, and in 161 countries, including Colombia’s capital, Bogotá.

As world leaders try to build a momentum on climate change issues and reach a global deal by 2015, the UN meeting with 126 heads of state will aim to pledge support for curbing damaging heat-trapping emissions and the continued destruction of rainforests.

International business leaders and environmental activists are expected to attend the conference hosted by Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon. In Melbourne, Australia, some 30,000 turned out Sunday to call for urgent action on climate change. In Canada, thousands of protestors have gathered near U.S border posts to express their frustration over the expansion of coal terminals, hydraulic “fracking” and the impact on delicate ecosystems by the tar sands pipelines.

A gathering scheduled for Sunday morning at the Parque Nacional in Bogotá and part of the nationally-sponsored movement, Marcha Ciudadana contra el Cambio Climático, saw 3000 participants march towards the Plaza de Bolivar, and in the Parque de Periodistas, students carried the Colombian tricolor.
