Riding a mule to school for many Colombian children continues to be the only form of transportation and an essential aspect of living in remote villages. While many children enjoy the comfort of buses or hired drivers, these two girls from the colonial enclave of Monguí, in the central mountains of Boyacá – and voted one of the most beautiful towns in the department – were riding through a grey cold mist of the high wetlands when they caught the eye of British photographer Piers Calvert. This image exemplifies daily life in the Colombian countryside, the innocence of youth and the skill with which children can manage their beasts of burden.
